‘If you decide to use chemical insecticides to prevent or eliminate a ladybug infestation, take precautions to avoid health risks. To achieve optimal results, apply the product in the fall and spring. The most common ladybugs to see in the United States are the seven-spotted ladybug, the nine-spotted ladybug and the multicolored Asian ladybug. The multicolored Asian ladybug is, unfortunately, an invasive species, and also the one most likely to spend its winter in your home. Pets usually don’t bother them because the insects excrete hemolymph (blood), which has a funky taste, says Diepenbrock.
How to get rid of ladybugs in three easy ways
They are good for the environment, especially your home garden, because they prevent infestations and eat other insects in your yard. They are not an extreme threat at all, but you don't want to get used to seeing them in your home because that means there are families of them. While a ladybug or two is pretty normal in most homes around fall and winter, a huge number of them nestling in your doorframe can be alarming.
Do carpenter bees eat wood?
Asian lady beetles, on the other hand, are orange and yellow and have about 19 spots on their back. The Asian lady beetle has a black M on their head while ladybugs do not. Ladybugs are among the most beneficial insects, as they eat garden pests that can damage your garden or indoor plants, like aphids and mealybugs. (And they're super-cute too!) But sometimes, you'll find a lot of ladybugs coming indoors this time of year, which can be annoying—even if they aren't creepy. Finally, there are several high-quality insecticides that you can spray inside and outside your home or camper.
Use Commercial Ladybug Sprays
That's according to Pest Pointers, which says any type of mint from the mint family will deter ladybugs. According to Mother Earth News, mint, like peppermint, covers the smell ladybugs like (such as their fave food, aphids), and it also irritates them. Plus, menthol in the peppermint gets in the way of the pheromones that ladybugs and other household or garden pests rely on for mating and reproduction. Humans love lavender for how it smells, but it turns out that scent is a big turnoff for ladybugs. According to USA Today, the essential oils found in lavender leaves drive ladybugs and many insects away. The article suggests hanging dried lavender around the house, including closets.
In general, female carpenter bees tend to live longer than males as the females are the ones responsible for building and provisioning nests and laying eggs. As the weather turns cold, ladybugs start looking for a warm, safe place to spend the winter. Your dry, temperature-controlled home is the ideal place for a little ladybug trying to find shelter.

We learned a thing or two during our battle and want to share how to get rid of ladybugs in your home or RV. Ladybugs are drawn inside searching for food, warmth, and shelter – especially towards the beginning of winter when they struggle to survive outside. Around this time, it is a good idea to keep windows and doors closed or use window screens to prevent them from making their way inside and continuing the life cycle. One of the most important preventative measures for deterring lady beetles is keeping a clean and trim lawn. An overgrown and unattended lawn will result in higher insect populations in and around the home; this means more prey for lady beetles and more lady beetles inside your house. Finding a ladybug is often considered a sign of good luck, especially if you come across one in the garden.
Lavender oil, citronella oil, olive oil, vegetable oil, lemon and lime are all substances that bees will steer clear of. You can apply these oils like a topical to keep bees away while outside. We've outlined some safe and humane ways to help rid your home or yard of the brightly colored flying stingers. Outside your home, clean and repair gutters to prevent water from pooling around the roof or foundation. Remove any decaying material, such as wet leaves or dirty garbage cans, from around your home.
Removing individual beetles as they arrive will usually keep their friends away. Another way to keep stink bugs out is through preventative measures. Make sure entryways and windows are secure so nothing can enter. While pill bugs are generally harmless to humans and pets, they are a nuisance indoors. Frequent appearances of these pests in your home may indicate a leak, high humidity, or poor drainage.
Why Ladybugs Come Indoors During the Fall
But, while you might read online that certain herbs and essential oils will help keep ladybugs away, Holstrom says those hacks are unlikely to be helpful. Keep in mind that the best fly traps also perform well at attracting and eliminating other flying insects, including ladybugs. Farmers count on large colonies to fight aphids naturally because aphids damage crops. Ladybugs may lay their eggs near the aphid larvae so that young ladybugs can feast as soon as they’re born, thereby cutting the aphid population in a vegetable or flower garden. Ladybugs have an attraction to light, so you can also try setting light traps to effectively capture them. These traps use LED light to lure ladybugs into a container from which they cannot escape.
According to Epic Gardening, using diatomaceous earth around your home, especially in sealed-off areas like windows, awnings, and doorways, will repel ladybugs. Be sure you use food-grade diatomaceous earth, which is safe for humans and pets. Still, wear a mask and gloves when using it since it can cause eye and skin irritation. You may have read that citronella oil or peppermint oil repels ladybugs. Unfortunately, our pest control experts can't confirm that essential oils work for repelling ladybugs.
When in doubt, we always recommend reaching out to a top pest control company like Terminix or Orkin. They do not bite, they don’t spread disease, and they want nothing to do with people. The worst part about ladybugs is that they are annoying, and they have a bad habit of landing on people and crawling around with their tiny feet. They are not going to do anything to hurt you, your family, or your pets.
This pheromone has a distinct odor and can attract an army of ladybugs to your home or camper. Once they release the pheromone in your RV or house, it’s only a matter of time before more arrive at your doorstep. Ladybugs shelter in houses in order to survive through the winter, a form of hibernation called diapause.
